Become a better listener
Yesterday, we were all about talking. Today, we’re all about listening. It sounds simple, but in today’s busy world where it’s easy to get overstimulated, listening is a rare skill that many of us have yet to master.
Listening was a skill that our Account Director Neil Johnson learned at a young age (and no doubt what makes him great in working with our clients). “My mother taught me the importance of listening and realizing that you can’t really understand another person until you’ve been in their shoes,” said Neil.
Looking to become a better listener? Here are some tips from Forbes contributor Dianne Shilling:
- Face the speaker and maintain eye contact.
- Be attentive but relaxed.
- Keep an open mind
- Listen to the words and try to visualize what the speaker is saying.
- Don’t interrupt and don’t impose your solutions.
- Wait for the speaker to pause to ask clarifying questions.
- Ask questions to only ensure understanding.
- Try to feel what the speaker is feeling.
- Give the speaker regular feedback.
- Pay attention to what isn’t said—to nonverbal cues.
